The Army

The wartime role of the Army is to provide for the defence of Scotland's people and territory.  In peacetime its role is more diverse: practicing for the eventuality of war, peacekeeping operations, humanitarian missions, aid to civil powers (e.g. fighting wildfires)

About Us

The Army is organized into two combined arms brigades, a Coastal Commando (Special Forces) Unit and the Military Police.


Within the Army structure, there are different Corps. The Army Corps support the various combat functions - Manoeuvre, Fire Support, Air Defence, ISTAR, Mobility, Combat Service Support and Command & Control.  The combined Corps produce the Combined/All Arms.

Infantry Corps

The infantry core is the backbone of all armies.  Our infantry operates in the highly maneuverable light mechanised role.  Quickly able to get to where it matters.

Artillery Corps

The regular forces of the Artillery Corps provide gun batteries and air defence capabilities to the all arms brigades.  Through regular and reserve forces the Artillery Corps also provides area air defence and coastal  missile batteries to protect the nation.

Cavalry Corps

The Cavalry Corps is a light cavalry corps which specialises in reconnaissance. It uses light vehicles such as the Jackal 2 and the Coyote tactical support vehicle to operate in front of their comrades, monitoring enemy forces and sending information back to commanders.

Engineer Corps

The Corps of Engineers has two main functional areas. The provision of engineer support to the Infantry Brigades and the maintenance and upgrade of Defence Forces barracks and installations

Logistics Corps

The Logistics Corps conducts the logistical functions of Moving, fixing and fuelling to cover all aspects of military operations and that includes fuelling our personnel.

Training and Education Corps

The Ordnance Corps is to provides technical support to the Defence Forces for the Procurement, Storage, Distribution, Inspection, Maintenance, Repair and Disposal of all items of Ordnance related equipment. The Corps also trains personnel for and provides the State’s EOD/IEDD (bomb disposal) capability.

Medical Corps

The role of the Medical Corps is to ensure the coordination and provision of medical, dental and pharmaceutical support to the Defence Forces in the execution of its roles.

Comms and Intelligence Corps

The Communications and Intelligence (CIS) Corps is responsible for the development and operation of Information Technology systems in support of defence force tasks.  The Corps also captures and provides realtime signals intelligence to commanders.
